Daily consumption in adults is approx 300 mg, pregnant and nursing women need more calcium: 1200 mg to 1400 mg daily. Partly this consumption is covered by food intake, in partickular from milk and vegetables.
About 20 % of calcium is contained in bones giving them the required rigidity, the rest of calcium is contained in tissues and bodily fluids. If the organism lacks calsium in diet, calcium is withdrawn from bones - they lose their rigidity and are susceptible to fractures, it causes thinning of the bones (osteoporosis).
An indispensable precondition for calcium intake is the presence of the vitamin D which enables the transport of calcium into the blood.
